Believed to be about five thousand years old, the Great Sphinx of Egypt is massive , monumental, and mysterious. It was sculpted from limestone on the west bank of the Nile River and is facing the east in a true east-west orientation. The concept of the sphinx, which represents a lions body with a human head, traces back to Egyptian mythology, where it was used to depict a benevolent guardian, and was often associated with pharaohs.
