Mount Whitney in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California does not cast a striking, singular profile from many angles. Still, at 14,505 feet, or 4421 meters, it stands as the tallest mountain in California.  It is also distinguished as the highest peak in any of the 48 contiguous states of the United States. It ranks 24th in height amongst the peaks of the North American continent, and 81st among the untold number of peaks on planet Earth.
