Cappadocia Sandcastles

The Cappadocia region of what is today called Turkey was once a vast plateau hosting active volcanoes, including Mount Erciyes, Mount Hasan, among others.. These volcanoes erupted frequently, covering the landscape with layers of ash, lava, and basalt. These layers are the foundation of Cappadocia’s unique geology. In this large format photograph captured near Goreme, the soft tuff, or volcanic ash,  is seen as carved by erosion and the elements into a softly sculpted landscape of unique and other-worldly beauty.
