California Poppies

A prolific hillside of California poppies and lupine in the San Rafael Mountains of Southern California. This poppy variety is the floral emblem for the state of California, and it is found from mountains to desert across a range of climates. An interesting characteristic of the plant is that it can perform as an annual or sometimes a perennial, with more than one burst of blossoms if the climatic conditions permit. It is also light sensitive, closing its petals as the light diminishes through a process called nyctinasty.
